Repair it.
Often times furniture has suffered the ravages of time and neglect. During that time there is a chance that this once loved piece of furniture has suffered some structural damage. Frequently that damage can be quite severe and needs a component to be repaired or even replaced. Replacement can be quite a challenge, often meaning stages of dismantling to gain access to the broken part. Much time is spent ensuring that the correct materials are used and that the repair is carried out using appropriate materials and techniques to maintain as much integrity as possible.
Nothing is more satisfying to the restorer than the customer asking, “which is the new one?”. A sign of a job well done.
Refinish it.
Regarding the surface of a piece there are various questions that need to be answered before work can begin. I guess the first one is around how ‘new’ do you want it to look when the work is complete. I always encourage customers to consider how much history or story is held in the current surface? The marks that were put on a table by little children at play are often kept as a reminder of young families.
I will then determine the original finish.
Refinishing, whether that be French polishing (very time consuming) lacquering - usually sprayed on, or a few carefully rubbed coats of oil and wax is undoubtedly a very satisfying part of the process.
Transform it.
The whole transformation process should bring joy to all parties involved. Nothing makes me happier than seeing the smile when a piece is seen for the first time after the work is complete. Many times, the piece has been in the family for generations and returning it to it’s former glory rekindles memories of the past. I guess it’s all about taking treasured items from the past and enabling them to be treasured into the future.
